Samoa Conference 3

Opportunities and challenges for a sustainable cultural and natural environment

The Third Samoa Conference (SCIII) will be held 25-29 August 2014, the week before the start of the United Nations Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Apia, 1-4 September, 2014.

SCIII will reflect on the theme of the SIDS conference, sustainable development in small island states, at a time when small islands are uniquely challenged by the future impacts of climate change. The SCIII theme, however, embraces the concept of ‘sustainable development’ in the broadest sense. We will explore questions of how to sustain and protect Samoa’s past, present and future achievements in relation to the natural environment, culture, language, literary history, heritage, communications, science, health and education.

The conference will provide an opportunity for participants to share in a comprehensive international forum showcasing scholastic, vocational and artistic works on Samoa in Samoa; on the peoples of Samoa; and on Samoa’s environment, cultures (popular, national, local, international and diasporic), traditions, laws/lores, arts, musics, worldviews, politics, medicines and technologies.
