Professor Helene Martinsson-Wallin presented the Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi and the Prime Minister Susuga Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi with a copy of her book, “Samoan Archaeology and Cultural Heritage: Monuments and People – Memories and History”, yesterday 5 April 2016.
Prof Martinsson-Wallin’s book will be launched at the National University of Samoa on Thursday 7 April 2016 at the AOA Conference room at 12 pm.
According to Prof Martinsson-Wallin, the reason behind the publishing of this book is to “provide a foundation for Samoan students to become the custodians of the historical narrative based on Archaeological research”. The book also focuses on data and discussions from a three year programme for archaeology from the Pulemei mound in Savaii during 2002-2004 for which some have not been published yet.
Results and implications of this study was followed up by a eight year programme where she introduced courses in Archaeology at the National University of Samoa. These efforts have led to the establishment of a Bachelors programme for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management.
